Why a quotes FAQ? Doesn't the game come with english subtitles? Well, it does, but... to put it bluntly, the things the subtitles say, at least as far as standard openings/victories are concerned, have nothing whatsoever to do with what they're actually saying. According to Eggo, a Tecmo Representative who we're lucky enough to have on our boards, "We felt the normal translation left DoA3 feeling a little stiff, so we took some liberties with it.". Make that many liberties. Story mode is not included here, for the simple reason that Tecmo actually translated the story mode right, its only the normal quotes that got messed up. Anyway, without further ado, here is the long-awaited DoA3 Quotes FAQ.

Linear notes are my comments on the quote, oftentimes an informative little tidbit that I couldn't fit in the translation itself, but is quite helpful to know. This is one of the advantages of a written FAQ, in a game, Linear notes would be impossible.

I only got her to say this after playing about 10 rounds of versus and getting 'greatests' each time, but I'm sure its easier than that.

Its not quite as wordy in the original Japanese. :)

"Sorry, I'm not sweet." was the DoA2 translation. Its not nice to mock Tecmo, so I'll simply say how much they've improved since DoA2.

"Know the terror of the Shinobi!"

Yes indeed, Ayane is a badass. The form used in this, by the way, is not classical Japanese, but a very formalized form (My friend Kakashi-san calls it "theatrical"). Its used only two other times to my knowledge in the DoA series, Hayate's "Chikoku no yame ni chiriyuku ga ii" ("Dissapear into the darkness!") and during Ayane's DoA2 ending, "Kiku ga ii! Watashi koso, Miyama no nyo tengu!". In all these instances it lends a sort of dramatic sound to the quotes.

I hate to rip off of Tecmo's translations word for word, ('cause then whats the point of this FAQ?), but thats really the only way to translate this. As for what Hajinmon is, This is the specialized branch of Mugen Tenshin Ryu that Genra taught Ayane.

F.) Hitomi

A hard one to translate, as this is a stock phrase in Japan, which can mean anything from "Its a pleasure to meet you." to "Please watch my house for a few days while I go to Osaka to pick up fresh Sashimi.". In this case it basically is a way of introducing herself, and is a request for a good fight.

Vs. Hitomi

"Yorushiku"

"Hi!"

Another stock phrase, this one is much less formal than "Onegai Shimasu", and does not have the implication of a request for a good fight.

Victory

"Mada Mada Ikeru wa!"

"I can still go on."

Hitomi has won the fight, she can continue.

"Osu! Otsukaresama desita!"

"Thanks! It was a great fight!"

This is another rough translation. Osu is generally a greeting from one fighter to another, but in this case it is an acknowledgement that her opponent is a true warrior, and a thank you for a good fight.

"Waza wa chikara no naka ni ari!"

"Skill lies within power."

The only really .sig worthy of her quotes. :) Probably a stock phrase that she had to memorize and repeat 50 times a day when she was training.

"Yo---shi! Zekkouchou!!

"Great! I'm on fire!"

"Motto Tsuyoi hito wa inai no?" :walks away"

Whatever you translate it as, if this one hit move is so great, why doesn't she have it in the game? Probably a balance issue. ;)

A standard DOA3 phrase, Ayane says it too. No subtle implications here, if she says it, you got nailed.

Shoubu actually means "Game", not fight. But since the combatants are not sitting down to play a round of chess, "Fight" is a better meaning here. A stock phrase, the Ninja's all love to say this.

"I cannot allow anybody to interfere."

"Onegai.. Jama shinai de!"

"Please, do not interfere!"

"Kitzutsuketakunai kedo...."

"I don't want to hurt you, but if I have to, I will."

See? Kasumi's a goodie-goodie, you can see it in her quotes.

I think this is the extremely shortened version of "Sore de wa iku yo!". Again a very rude and informal way of speaking, especially compared to the other fighters.

I guess he's excited about his victory. "Chou" is fairly informal, and used a lot by younger people.

Believe it or not, Tina does not refer to her opponent as a loser. Good old Tecmo localazation staff.

Harikitte literally means "to be in high spirits"

"It hasn't even begun."

I think Tecmo's translation, "Not yet, its just beginning!" is a little too literal. Zack in DoA2 and Lei-Fang in DoA3 have similar quotes, "Go tanoshimi wa kore kara da/yo!" which means "The fun is about to start."

P.) Hayabusa

Nin is what's called a Kiai. A kiai is like all the winposes and taunts in fighting games where the person doesn't say anything, just goes "Whhaa!" and strikes a pose. It is essentially a method of raising your spirits.

Ah, the Ninja Clan's favorite word strikes again.

Another stock fighting game quote. Xiang-fa said this in Soul Calibur.

"Rin Pyou Tou Sha Kai Tin / Zin Retsu Zai Zen."

Don't even ask.

This quote was the cause of.. considerable controversy on the DoA3 message boards a long time ago. Here, once and for all, is the definitive and final answer on the subject, copied directly from the words of Kakashi, who graciously allowed me to use her writings in my FAQs.

"In Japan,1) priest in esoteric buddhism and Shintoism use this phrase to "make the space around him / her purified, " and sometimes use it as a part of prayer to make some evil things go away (eg. serious illness, inclement weather.) (yes, just like Rei Hino!) 2) Monk who is practicing aescetism uses this phrase in the same way and sometimes he seems to use in order to concentrate his attention. 3) People who learn some kobujutsu (ancient/ old styled martil arts) chant this phrase when they start training and when they finish training as a sort of custom. 4) In ninja novels, some ninja use this phrase as a sort of spells, some ninja uses in order to concentrate and to escape from the illusion ( suggestion?) given by his opponent.

This phrase is called "kuji" in Japan. In some books, it is written that the phrase was originally chanted by Taoist [especially when he entered mountain.]

When this phrase came to Japan, it influenced Japanese buddhism, Shintoism and Shugendou (one of buddhism which make people endure aescetic practice), and it was adapted as a new phrase to pray.In Japan, today, this phrase seems to became a stock phrase and a mere prayer at the same time, it is quite difficult to find its meaning even though I went to the bookstore and read some books which is specializing about "Taoism / shin sen shisou" (_åŽv‘z) in China.

A book said that that phrase originally means in Chinese, "all warriors and all challengers make lines of battle and camps / position in front of me," but another book said "all the camps of all fighters and warriors are defeated in front of me" and another book told me another meaning. ( To be honest, it gave me a heavy headache. )
